Project Overview

Our name does not describe what we do, as people associate us with health. We need to develop a new message and create storytelling to better describe our vision and mission. Once we accomplish this, we will be in a better position to change our name and develop new graphics, logo to update our look.

Our organization, Healthy Cities Tutoring, has been in existence for 25 years. It first started as a program for the City of San Carlos and later we incorporated as a nonprofit, 501 (c) (3), and no longer associated with the city. We tutor students in the San Carlos and Redwood City school districts for free, utilizing volunteers who donate their time once a week for one hour.

Having experience previously working with Taproot, our board would form a small team to work with the consultant in accomplishing this project. We would need a volunteer who has messaging and storytelling experience and could lead us through this first phase.

Healthy Cities Tutoring provides free tutoring to approximately 400 students each year to first through eight graders. These are students who are struggling to succeed and referred by principals and teachers. Our volunteers range from high school students to retirees. In addition to tutoring, we also mentor and encourage the love of learning and to build the student's confidence. There are many organizations who tutor, but most charge a fee or tutor larger groups of students. Some of our tutors stay with the same child for many years.

Generating new messaging and storytelling would help us recruit tutors, one of our biggest challenges.

The board and senior staff are eager and prepared to put in the time to come up with new messaging and storytelling to make our organization more attractive to volunteers and funders. . We have set aside funds in our budget to make the necessary changes and to incorporate this into our new website. We would have a few individuals work with the volunteer from Taproot to expedite the process and understand what it takes to accomplish this task.. Having previous experience with Taproot, I am well aware of what it takes to make the project a success.
