Modernizing Skills-Based Volunteering: How State Street Scaled Talent Development and Community Impact with Taproot
In 2023, State Street Foundation partnered with Taproot to reimagine its long-standing skills-based volunteer program. After traditional volunteer opportunities diminished and participation declined in the early years of the pandemic, the team set out to build a new model that would maximize impact for nonprofits while offering more meaningful opportunities for State Street’s global workforce.
Working closely with Taproot, State Street rolled out a suite of accessible pro bono service models designed to strengthen communities while advancing employee development.
And the results? Impressive.
In 2025 alone, more than 2,000 employees contributed over 35,000 hours of pro bono service. Participants reported stronger engagement and skill development, while 95% of participating nonprofits said that the programs met or exceeded their goals.
State Street’s partnership with Taproot shows what’s possible when companies invest in their greatest asset: their people. By putting professional expertise to work, they’re strengthening nonprofits, developing talent, and creating lasting impact for communities.
